Applewood preparatory school recently received a Haygrove Garden Tunnel. The school has Eco-School status.

The Eco-school Programme is an international sustainability schools initiative that is active in 51 countries around the world. The programme is aimed at creating awareness and action around environmental sustainability in schools and their surrounding communities as well as supporting ESD (Education for Sustainable Development) in the national curriculum.

Eco-Schools were initiated in South Africa in 2003, with as WESSA is the implementing agent, and there are over 1,000 registered schools on the programme.

The Grade three Applewood kids have been managing a vegetable garden this year and the tunnel has made their life easier and generated a lot of excitement. Teacher Vanessa Dave “I cannot believe how quickly our vegetables grow in the tunnel”

The grade three learners recently made R1600 for their classroom improvements by selling their vegetables at a market they held at the school!
